The crew of the Bebop is once again ready to take control of space, bringing bad guys to justice and trying to make some cash while doing it. Join the always cool Spike, investigative genius Jet, the fabulous Faye, the amazing (but weird) Ed and the super-smart Welsh Corgi named Ein as they try to make a buck in the year 2071. How do they do it? They re bounty hunters. Great story, great presentation, great price

Cowboy Bebop is a futuristic story about bounty hunters in Space. This is a great story very entertaining with a perplexing but great ending. You will enjoy every minute of this series because there is never a dull moment. I strongly recommend this story to the fans of futuristic stories, laid back characters and the lovers of good detective stories. If you are unsure about buying this product, you will not be disappointed if you do so. The presentation is great because the six DVD's come in a single DVD box (it takes up the space of two regular DVD boxes if you are worried about size). The price is a great bargain. I have watched this series two times, and both times got blown away by this great constructed story. The only thing I wish is for Cowboy Bebop to be released on Blueray. Standard definition does not do enough justice to the artistry of this amazing anime.

Note: I watch a YouTube review of this series, and the reviewer pointed out that all anime box sets with the tag line Anime Legends come in a similar box like this set.

The distillation of cool

Before it was a household word for anime and animation fans, "Bebop" referred to a style of fast-paced Jazz marked by virtuoso performances. If you've ever heard of Charlie Parker or Thelonius Monk, they were Bebop gods in their own time. Bebop had a cool, smooth and devil-may-care attitude which still permeates Jazz culture to this day.
Cowboy Bebop takes that atmosphere and runs with it. The story of a ragtag crew of free agents who shuttle around from planet to planet in their ship bounty-hunting is the antithesis of the stodgy Star Trek type of prime directives and military chains of command. There are no captains and no aliens, only a human society in shambles with people living in a frontier of solar-system width here and there in small pockets of humanity.
The series is all about grand gestures and the character archetypes are not deconstructed too much but rather played straight. Other than in the final run of episodes, when they are confronted with the unpleasant feelings the lifestyle they are driven to pursue gives rise to (a lack of attachment to life leading to loneliness seems to be a common theme), the anime is all about cool encounters. Secondary characters are mostly stereotypes, which makes the story suffer in a few points (Gren comes to mind) and don't get much development.
Unlike pretty much any other anime, one of the main calling cards of "Bebop" is its music. Composed and played by a Yoko Kanno outfit called "The Seatbelts" (a band both in real life and in-universe) it is a blend of many styles. From the urgent and syncopated opening song "Tank!", the jazzy-sax-meets-Deep-Forest "Space Lion", the Morricone-inspired mock-cowboy themes to the adult rock anthems "The real folk blues", "Blue" and "Call me, call me". The music is cool, atmospheric and played with gusto, full of grand gestures like the anime itself. Small wonder fans of this series cannot divorce the music from the animation or the plot as it's a vibrant, coherent whole.

To sum it up, this is something that no anime fan should skip as it will probably stay with you for a while. For those unacquainted with anime, Cowboy Bebop will be a great start.

The Definitive Anime Series

Reviewed by Elias L. Blondeau, 2010-02-04

I'm as jaded an anime fan as they come. Even though I'm only sixteen, I've spent thousands of hours pouring over manga,
anime and other things related to the culture of those two. My room is covered in wallscrolls, 500+ volumes of manga, etc.
So, believe me when I say that "Cowboy Bebop" is the single greatest anime series I have ever seen. In fact, it may be
the best anime series any studio will ever produce.

Produced by Sunrise (yes, the "Gundam" people), "Bebop" follows a ragtag group of intergalactic bounty hunters as they
hunt down bounty heads in order to buy food. The group consists of tormented former gangster Spike, level-headed badass Jet, gold-digging vixen Faye, and the brilliant tech-girl Ed, along with a data-dog (it makes sense when you watch it) named Ein.

And... and well, that's about it.

This may seem like a very basic plot, but nothing could be further from the truth. Through the twenty-six episode span of the show, we learn more about each character, Spike in particular. Everything from his estranged brother Vicious to his near-fatal relationship with blond bombshell Julia combine to form Spike's conflicted, troubled past. This past, filled with bloodshed and tears, is one that catches up to Spike and culminates in the brilliant two-part climax. The narrative choices are some that many anime fans still discuss today, and the final scene is one that will spark a debate among many a series devotee.

As if the well-written plot wasn't enough, though, Sunrise went the extra mile with this one. Yoko Kanno's score is among the best (if not THE best) in any anime, and the voice actors, especially in the English dub, fit each character perfectly. The animation is also magnificent, still holding up to today's new, computer-candy-coated releases.

As for the box itself, it's a pretty sweet deal. These are the Remix episodes, so you get retouched animation (not altered, mind you, just clarified) and a new 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound audio track. The special features are many, and definitely will keep you entertained for a few extra hours. The case is very attractive, too, with a shiny black-silver-and-red gleam to it.

Usually, I would put my complaints here, but to be quite honest.... I have none.

"Bebop" is one of the shows that everybody, not just anime fans, should watch at least once. Filled with compelling characters, crazy but believable plots, and a twist ending that is as infuriating as it is poetic, Sunrise's space epic is one that must be seen to be believed.
